Mat Collishaw HYSTERIA
Curated by James Putnam.
The exhibition’s title, Hysteria, relates to the print that hangs above Freud’s iconic psychoanalytical couch depicting the French neurologist Jean Martin Charcot showing his students a woman in a hysterical fit. Charcot (1825-1893) used hypnotism to treat hysteria and other abnormal mental conditions and he had a profound influence on the young Freud. Collishaw has created a new anamorphosis work inspired by this picture and a series of ghostly projections based on Charcot’s original photographic case studies.
Hysteria is the latest in the critically acclaimed ongoing series of Freud Museum exhibitions curated by James Putnam that have included projects by Sophie Calle, Sarah Lucas, Ellen Gallagher, Tim Noble & Sue Webster and Oliver Clegg. The exhibition also coincides with the launch of Collishaw’s new publication entitled ‘Insecticides’.

Marta Golab Jewish Papercuts & Polish Art
Golab is a Polish Catholic artist, living and working in Krakow. She started making papercuts as a child, drawing inspiration from the motifs of the Polish highlands and the Art Deco movement.
Jewish papercuts are part of a long tradition of folk and ceremonial art, once very common in Ashkenazi-Jewish communities.
Fascinated, she to began to study Jewish culture and experiment with the medium, producing her first exhibition of Jewish papercuts within two years. Golab’s work has been exhibited widely in Poland and abroad. Her work features in private collections, however most of her major pieces have been donated to institutions commemorating the Jewish presence in Poland. Her book Jewish Paper-cut was published in Krakow in 2006.

Handel had many friends and admirers in London who collected, played and promoted his music, entertained him in their homes, and supported him in difficult times. Through the private letters and diaries of the Harris family this exhibition explores these relationships and shows the many sides of the famous composer’s character and fortunes.Curated by Donald Burrows and Rosemary Dunhill.
